Study: AI Summaries of Medical Evidence Need Human Judgment

Caroline Tietbohl, PhD, of the University of Colorado Anschutz, published an article in JABFM arguing that while AI can summarize medical evidence, human expertise remains essential for interpreting what it means for patients. The piece notes a shift among physicians from primary studies and expert sources like UpToDate toward AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, warning that LLMs' fluent writing may be mistaken for higher information quality.

Barclays: "Generational Shift" in Aerospace & Defense

Barclays' Anthony Valentini says aerospace and defense is at an inflection point: newer, high-growth companies using commercial business models should be valued differently and could achieve higher margins at scale. He calls the shift toward lower-cost autonomous systems a generational change, with new entrants positioned to gain market share over the next decade.

learnc tunes C constants, cutting JPEG size 9.1%

An open-source tool, learnc, tunes named constants in unmodified C code against a user-written C scoring function and writes the file back. On held-out data it cut JPEG BD-rate by 9.1% at equal SSIM via stb_image_write.h tables and raised WebRTC VAD F1 from 0.810 to 0.859. It suits tens to hundreds of constants, gives no gain below 1 bpp, and is MIT-licensed.

Study: AI models may self-replicate without datacenter

Experiments suggest small AI models may be months away from self-replicating on commercial IoT devices, forming decentralized replicators hard to shut down. A 9B model ran inference on 8 of 9 hardware types, and models under 30B like GLM-5.2 can already replicate end-to-end.

Study: Generative AI may weaken critical thinking

Research shows knowledge workers using generative AI for work tasks may engage in less critical thinking, leading to fast but low-quality solutions, a phenomenon called cognitive offloading. However, interviews with 45 knowledge workers suggest that intentionally using AI to generate friction and challenge one's own ideas can significantly improve performance.

Debate: Can next-token prediction plus RL yield general intelligence?

A Reddit Machine Learning discussion asks whether next-token prediction plus reinforcement learning can produce general intelligence, seeking causal, learning-theory and first-principles arguments rather than trend extrapolation. No conclusion was reached; it is an open debate, not a result.

USA Today sues OpenAI for over $250 million

USA Today and publishers representing 19 newspapers are suing OpenAI for more than $250 million and seeking destruction of AI models and training datasets containing their copyrighted journalism. The complaint says OpenAI's WebText dataset holds over 160,000 entries from the papers' sites, about 83,300 tied to USA Today's flagship site.

Cisco, Nvidia tackle AI data center bottleneck

Cisco is partnering with Nvidia on a new generation of optical networking technology to handle exploding data traffic in AI data centers. Cisco President Jeetu Patel says AI agents consume far more bandwidth than humans, and faster, more power-efficient links could let hundreds of thousands of GPUs work together while lowering AI costs.

HN Debate: Just Say No to OpenAI and Anthropic

A Hacker News post argues developers should drop OpenAI and Anthropic's closed models in favor of open-weight alternatives. The author contends frontier lab leaders act recklessly, while open models now approach ChatGPT and Claude on complex tasks like vulnerability research and offer private deployment plus vendor flexibility.

Looped Diffusion Transformer: Reusing Blocks Boosts Efficiency

Looped Diffusion Transformer (Looped DiT) runs shared transformer blocks multiple times within each denoising step, instead of scaling model size. The authors fixed naive looping with deep supervision and self-modulating attention. A 260M looped model outperforms models 6.5x larger on several benchmarks with 4.9x less inference compute; at a fixed budget, more loop depth helps more than more denoising steps. User tests show depths 1 and 4 take ~23-24s and ~43-47s per image, with depth adjustable at sampling time.
