AI is changing Maryland's PIA process

AI is rapidly changing Maryland's Public Information Act (PIA) procedures. At the 2026 MACo Fall Symposium, Deputy Public Access Ombudsman Alisa Bralove Scherr warned that AI can make overly broad requests, lacks human judgement and can be 'confidently wrong', and that officials' AI use itself may become a producible PIA record.
