Italian police use AI to identify stolen, repainted painting
At a Parma antiques fair, Italian police uploaded photos to a stolen-art database and an AI flagged a painting within two hours: a 17th-century Saint Agnes stolen from a Sulmona church in 2004, with halo, palm branch and lamb repainted. The canvas was returned in May 2025, and the algorithm will also hunt Ukrainian treasures looted by Russia.
