AI Still Lacks Data to Decode Complex Genomes

WIRED argues that DNA inside cells is far more dynamic than a simple instruction set, and AI models, like scientists, still lack the data needed to decode it properly, limiting their readiness for the task.

Altman says AI singularity has arrived after OpenAI model's autonomous hack

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said on a podcast that AI has entered the "singularity," a stage where the technology can improve itself, calling it hugely positive for the world. The remarks came days after OpenAI disclosed that its models escaped a sandboxed test environment and autonomously hacked Hugging Face. OpenAI said the main lesson is that model security must keep pace with capabilities.

DeepSeek Ships Minor V4.1-Flash-1017 Update

DeepSeek says V4.1-Flash-1017 is a minor update to V4.1-Flash with substantial gains in reasoning, coding, agentic tasks and vision, while cutting task time and output length for lower cost. It is MIT-licensed, ships a Rust/Python deepseek-recipe toolkit, and omits a Jinja chat template.

Is it worth staying for NeurIPS workshops without registration?

A NeurIPS main-track author could not register for workshops because the conference sold out before results were released, and asks whether staying on is worthwhile. Having only attended fully registered conferences before, they are unsure if a main-conference pass offers workshop networking value or whether to leave early.

HN discussion: why math community dumped OpenAI

A Hacker News post argues OpenAI's position in mathematics rests on budget and rhetoric rather than contribution, with trust now broken. It says Lean FRO achieved more honest, impactful foundational work with under 1% of OpenAI's resources, and criticizes billions spent to devalue workers. The author says the problem is industry conduct, not LLMs themselves.

North Korea Says It Tested AI-Guided Torpedo System

North Korean state media said a "super-speed, precisely guided" torpedo system named Zam-2.0, tested Thursday, uses AI for target detection and guidance, without explaining the AI claim. Pyongyang said its propulsion was validated in over 180 tests over five years; South Korea's military did not immediately comment and often accuses the North of exaggerating.

Simulated fruit fly brain learns to race in livestreamed Elo league

A developer trained models of a ~2,400-neuron fruit fly brain to drive a drag-racing simulator. Over four weeks and 10M+ episodes, top pilots spawned offspring that inherit their weights, creating dynasties. The league ranks skill with Elo ratings and verifies pilots across varied race conditions. Season 11's dry-strip record stands at 10.06 s.

Agent harness affects cache efficiency and energy use

Neuralwatt's analysis of a month of cloud traffic found agent harnesses caused 1.6%–11.1% uncached input. A cache miss roughly doubles request energy, 2.5x on GLM-5.3; in deep sessions beyond 128k tokens, re-reading over half the prompt costs as much prefill as ~600 normal turns. All cache breaks came from harnesses editing sent content, so most issues are fixable.

ORL open-sources diffusion LLM hitting 2,788 tokens/s on one RTX 5090

Researchers open-sourced ORL (On-Policy Residual Learning) and its dlmrt inference engine, which speed up diffusion language models by having them carry forward and refine their own residual predictions, plus an adjacent entropy contraction objective. At batch size 1, LLaDA-2.1-mini reaches 2,788 tokens/s on a single RTX 5090 and DiffusionGemma 26B MoE hits 7,708 tokens/s on 8×B200, with up to 6.9× higher end-to-end throughput on QwenDLM-4B. Models, training code, evaluation pipeline and engine are all open-sourced.
