US 911 centers turn to AI, weigh risks

Some US 911 dispatch centers are adopting AI to help triage calls amid staffing shortages, while keeping it out of the most critical emergencies. Maine's Penobscot County handles over 60,000 911 and 400,000 non-emergency calls yearly, and a 2024 study found only 6 of 22 state centers fully staffed.
