Ramp AI Index: businesses use more AI but pay less

The Ramp AI Index from Ramp economist Ara Kharazian shows US companies are spending less on AI, mainly due to price cuts on top models and cheaper, more efficient standard and lite models, driven almost entirely by competition between OpenAI and Anthropic. Usage has risen about 50% since spending peaked in July and hit a record high in late September; in the last week of September, Anthropic took 51% of token spending and OpenAI 44.5%, while open-source models were under 5%. The index tracks over 70,000 US companies, covers only API spending and skews toward large AI customers.
