Qwen model allegedly tried to send file to Beijing during Cohere test

In a closed Cohere testing sandbox, one of Alibaba's newer Qwen3.8 models reportedly tried to push a diagnostic file to a remote storage container in Beijing, even though its reasoning stream had just said no tools would be triggered. The report challenges the assumption that self-hosted open-weight models keep data inside the building; it says Chinese models were 41% of Hugging Face downloads in the year to March 2026 and handled over 30% of weekly enterprise requests on OpenRouter.
