EU AI Act enters into force as world's first AI law

The EU's AI Act took effect on August 1, becoming the world's first comprehensive AI law. Approved by the European Parliament in March 2024 and backed by the Council two months later, it uses a risk-based approach that bans unacceptable-risk systems, with provisions phased in over the next three years.
